Work Is In Getting In The Way Of Work

I’m toying around with a website re-design, which is getting in the way of real work. However, I’ve knocked out a few Adobe Illustrator designs for kicks. Some of these were fired off to Tee Fury.

One Painting Per Month: February 2011

I finished this on February 24th of 2011 as part of my personal challenge: to finish a painting every month for the year.

This is from a photo by a gent named Tom Klubens. It depicts Slammy Faye of the Naptown Roller Girls. I took the original photo into Photoshop, adjusted levels and smudged it up. I used the altered image as a source for the painting here.

This painting took about four hours from start to finish and I was much more painterly with the entire process. I can see doing a few more in this style before working more saturated color into the piece.

Producing and Not Consuming

I read an article by Jimiyo which more or less said “go forth and create”. The idea is that the more you create, the less you should consume. And the more you create the more others will consume your work.

This isn’t really new thinking by any stretch but it’s nice to see it repeated. In my 9-5 world we really try to follow the “iterate often” mantra that has made software development a living thing. I’ve been trying to follow this myself for the past few years (and recently the past few months) and to date I have half-a-dozen projects on the burners. I don’t think I’ve drawn this much since I was a kid.

Work, school and other art have kept me so busy that I haven’t been able to post anything here. I’ll try to change that.
